The difference between 304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel

2022-05-21

We often use  things made from stainless steel in our daily life, such as utensils, tools, etc. Some of these stainless steel items will be used as food containers, and some will be used as tools. Therefore, the materials used in stainless steel for different purposes are also different. 304 and 306 stainless steel are the most common in our lives, what is the difference between the 304 stainless steel and  316 stainless steel ?
1. 304 stainless steel
304 stainless steel is actually a stainless steel model that we use the most in our lives. The common stainless steel bowls, stainless steel spoons, and stainless steel water cups in our lives are almost all made of 304 stainless steel. Stainless steel is generally made of iron as the main component, and then adding some carbon compounds, nickel, chromium and other metal elements. The grade of stainless steel is generally judged by the content of rare metals. And 304 stainless steel generally must contain 18% chromium and 8% nickel to meet its standards, which is what we often call the food grade stainless steel standard. This grade of stainless steel has more acid and alkali contact, so 304 stainless steel has good acid and alkali resistance, high density, and beautiful polishing.
2. 316 stainless steel

Compared with 304, 316 stainless steel has a rare metal called molybdenum (Mo) in its composition. This metal element can make 316 stainless steel have better corrosion resistance than 304. Therefore, it is also generally used in food therapy, machinery, heavy industry, or parts in high temperature environments. However, the price of 316 stainless steel is also higher than that of 304 stainless steel. However, in terms of oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance and hardness, 316 stainless steel is also better than 304 stainless steel.
